Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Concerns about bed bug outbreaks have been apparent in the Asia-Pacific region for some time. Moreover, the spread of this pest is fairly rapid. First appearing in France earlier this year, bed bug outbreaks have emerged in South Korea, Hong Kong, and most recently in Singapore.
So far, there have been no extreme bed bug outbreaks reported in Asia, but some residents and city governments have hired pest control companies.
In Singapore, pest control company Aardwolf Pestkare said there had been a 40% increase in bed bug-related cases in the last two months, according to a CNA report.
Another pest extermination company, Pestbusters, has also seen demand increase by around 15% in the last six months.
“The numbers continue to increase and I suspect the numbers will probably continue to increase because the holiday season is approaching,” said Joachim Lee, entomologist at Pestbusters, as quoted by CNA on Thursday (23/11/2023).
How to avoid bed bugs
Bed bugs are very mobile pests. These small insects can land on many objects used by humans so they are very easy to move around.
Peter Chan of Aardwolf Pestkare said One way to avoid bringing these pests home is to soak clothes and other items in water with a temperature above 60 degrees Celsius.
Here’s how to bring bed bugs home after traveling:
1. Unload dirty clothes from the suitcase in the bathroom then shake them out on the light-colored floor so that the fleas can be seen.
2. Check the suitcase carefully, make sure there are no ticks in hidden places such as pockets or zippers.
3. Immediately wash your clothes as usual, but if you are worried about lice landing, soak the clothes in hot water.
4. To be more careful, Steam suitcases or bags that cannot be washed using hair dryer. This method can kill fleas.
