‘This is why bringing history to life through costume is the best job in the world’

Not all heroes wear capes… our Unsung Heroes series celebrates ordinary people doing extraordinary work.

Now Emily, 34, from Bishop Auckland, is helping to bring British history to life.

What’s your occupation?

I’m head of wardrobe for Kynren, an outdoor show telling the story of Britain from Roman times onwards.

Why ‘Kynren’?

It is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning ‘family’. This festival brings people together to learn about history. This was done by 1,000 local volunteers.

Why are costumes important?

The color of the tunic may reflect a character’s personality or its connection to an idea in the story. Every detail matters.

What creation are you proud of?

A Victorian dress made from a pair of Laura Ashley curtains. The headless horseman is the most difficult. I made foam shoulders with tie-covered openings so the actors could see out. We don’t use model heads because they can scare children.

Are men’s costumes a bit boring?

No, often they are the ones who overdo it the most. There’s definitely a bit of a fuss going on!

Are there royalties?

Our Henry VIII has a tunic skirt with a coat lined with faux fur and metallic threads that sparkle as the actor moves.

Do you have animals in the show?

Yes, there was one show with 250 birds. We have to make sure the costumes aren’t too shiny, because that will distract the birds and they won’t fly towards the actors!

How busy are you?

Each performance features 12-15 people with several costume changes. We have about 200 costumes to make by summer.

What was the surprising part of the show?

A Viking ship emerges from the lake. The audience thought the crew were puppets – but they were actually a diving team of actors.

Are you a creative child?

Yes. I would make random things out of cardboard and yogurt containers.

How do you relax?

I went to the fair to buy used jewelry. I love the stories attached to vintage pieces.

PakarPBN

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.

In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.

The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
