Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Sam Altman will not return as CEO of OpenAI, the startup he founded to develop the generative AI service ChatGPT.
Previously, the board of directors fired Altman from the CEO position on Friday (17/11) last week. This decision was made suddenly and shocked employees, c-level, and the technology industry at large.
In an internal company memo, it was stated that Altman’s temporary replacement was Mira Murati, who had previously served as OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO).

Shear co-founded Twitch, a game streaming service under Amazon. He has stepped down from the position of CEO of the company since the beginning of this year.
Sam Altman Will Not Return to OpenAI
Several investors and management are trying to return Altman to OpenAI. The reason is, there is fear that OpenAI’s business will be shaken after the founder left.
Apart from that, many Altman loyalist employees admitted they were disappointed with this decision. There are concerns that there will be a mass exodus among employees.
Moreover, after learning about Altman’s dismissal, many employees were said to have walked out of OpenAI’s headquarters in San Francisco, quoted from ReutersMonday (20/11/2023).
However, OpenAI Board of Commissioners Ilya Sutskever confirmed that Altman would not return as CEO. He confirmed this decision to the employees.
According to Sutskever, Altman’s behavior and the way he communicated with the board undermined the company’s ability to oversee the development of artificial intelligence (AI).
OpenAI did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for confirmation. Altman also could not be contacted.
On Sunday (19/11), Reuters reported that Altman was discussing returning to OpenAI and improving the company’s structure. However, it seems that discussions with the board of directors have stalled and there is no middle ground.
In an internal memo, it was stated that Microsoft would remain a partner of OpenAI, even though Altman was no longer the captain.
