Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Golf is a sport that is synonymous with the upper middle class so it has image as an exclusive sport. Moreover, one of the goals of playing golf is to expand your network of business relationships.
As time goes by, many young people, especially Generation Z, are starting to look at this small ball sport. In fact, uploads of moments playing golf with friends and family are often popular on social media.
However, Merchandising General Manager of Golf House, Tinneke Agustina, revealed that the golf trend in Indonesia has actually started to decline since new normal enforced in the country. In fact, according to him, the golf trend in Indonesia actually increased drastically during the Covid-19 pandemic, namely the period 2020 to 2021. At that time, golf became the sport of choice because it implemented a physical distancing system and was done outdoors.
Furthermore, he stated that the Covid-19 pandemic was the peak of young people’s interest in golf. Not only men, women and children are also among the groups who like golf during the pandemic.
“Golf trends in Indonesia [pada 2023] decreased compared to during the Covid-19 pandemic, namely 2020 and 2021, yes. “Currently it is decreasing, but it is still better compared to 2019,” Tinneke told CNBC Indonesia at Damai Indah Golf BSD, South Tangerang, Thursday (19/10/2023).
“During the Covid-19 pandemic, there were a lot of ‘Covid-19 golf players’ because they couldn’t go anywhere. At that time, the only activity they could do was golf because it was a safe sport, outside, calm, exposed to the sun, And physical distancing,” explained Tinneke.
According to Tinneke, one of the factors causing the decline in the golf trend in Indonesia is the return of workers to the office or work from office (WFO) so have little time to play golf.
Nevertheless, he is optimistic that the golf trend in Indonesia will increase in the near future, although not significantly. Tinneke assesses that the increasing trend in golf will occur through sales of golf clothes, shoes, bags and accessories.
“Next year (2024), golf trends will be the same as 2023, but what will be significant will be purchases soft goods or clothes and shoes, bag (bags), accessories. “That will increase next year,” Tinneke said.
