The killer of Sarah Payne, Roy Whiting, has told the court how a inmate tried to kill him with wooden calves.
The famous killer was allowed to curl up under his bed after Andrew Light, 45, began to attack his head and neck with raw weapons at the top Wakefield HMP, the jury hears.
When a guard asks if Whiting is dead, the light allegedly answered: ‘Let’s hope so.’
Whiting told Leeds Crown Court: “I’m very difficult – I think it’s something big.”
Prosecutor Michael Smith told the judges ‘that we would not look for sympathy for Roy Whiting’, which they heard serving life for the murder of Sarah in 2000, but added in this case ‘he was a victim’.

Giving evidence, Whiting told the jury that he was in a single residential cell in D Wing during the association period between 14:00 and 16:30 on February 11 last year.
He said the light entered his cell when he stood next to the notice board marking what he ate that day.
“I heard the door open in my cell and an inmate came in. I did not know him, I had never met him, never talked to him,” Whiting told the court.
‘I have seen it on the wing maybe once or twice. He asked if I was shirged, and I said “Yes”.
‘And then he pulled homemade calves and began to attack me with it. It was in his hand, and I didn’t see him until he pulled his hand in front of him.
“He didn’t say anything, rather than starting to swing with me with a calf in his hand.”
Whiting said the rain of the rain ‘was strong enough’ punch on his face and head when he tried to defend himself with his hand.
He described the loss of balance and fell to the bed with his back to the wall.
The light then lay on the betel lime, the court heard, who won the larger wrist of the man.
“He is still trying to stab me with a calf, but he can’t get real strength,” Whiting said.
Light then stood up and Whiting uses his feet to fend off him, he said, adding: ‘I just tried to defend myself as best I could.’
He described the ‘at least a dozen’ blow to his face and head, which ‘came so fast and fast’.
The light then stood up, the court heard, and Whiting could get out of bed.
He said he then heard a ‘toy’ from the prison guard key and made a ‘lunge’ for the door and shouted to ask for help.
“I know that I have been cut badly, I don’t know where to,” Whiting said, describing how he was ‘cruel’ after trying to fight his attacker.
He said: ‘I got under the bed for protection.’
The officer then entered the cell and held back the light.
The court heard the light asking, ‘Is he dead?’ Answered by a guard: ‘Let’s hope not.’

Mr. Smith told the Whiting jury serving time at HMP Wakefield for the murder of Sarah Payne more than 20 years ago.
The jury was told that Light had admitted to having an article born in prison and also pleaded guilty to injuring Whiting illegally.
But the prosecutor said the attack was an attempt to kill betel lime or carry out very serious damage.
Light denied attempted murder and injuries with intention.
The trial continues.
