Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – United States President Joe Biden this week issued presidential regulations regarding artificial intelligence (AI). Apparently, one of the reasons this regulation was issued was the latest Mission Impossible film starring Tom Cruise.
In an interview with US television station PBS, Biden’s closest person in the White House talked about the process of drafting US AI regulations.
The closest person is White House Chief of Staff Bruce Reed. The position of chief of staff is usually held by the US President’s right-hand man, the chief of staff usually occupies an office right next to the Oval Office.
He said that Biden and he watched Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, at the US presidential vacation spot called Camp David, earlier this year.
According to him, the depiction of AI technology in the Hollywood film made an impression on Biden, who is 80 years old. In the film, Ethan Hawke, played by Tom Cruise, faces an enemy called The Entity.
The Entity turns out to be a wild AI which then becomes the entity behind acts of terrorism and other disasters throughout the world.
Although, according to Futurism, the events narrated pass by Mission Impossible far from reality and far-fetched, the film succeeded in portraying the dangers and potential of AI to Biden.

“If he was not aware or understood about the dangers that could occur because of AI technology before watching the film, he clearly saw what there was to be worried about [setelah menontonnya],” Reed said.
Apart from the film, Biden’s eyes were also opened by the image of his beloved dog. According to Reed, the staff showed doctored images of Biden and his pet dog created using AI. “He saw how [AI] make bad poetry.”
The Entities it’s not realistic. In an interview with The Washington Post, for example, an AI expert named Alex Hanna stated that the depiction of AI in Mission Impossible was absurd.
“His ability to hack any kind of electronic system, it’s unbelievable,” Hanna said.
However, regardless of whether it is realistic or not The Entity, The US government has taken concrete steps to stem the potential dangers of AI.
