Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Starlink will reportedly operate in Indonesia soon. Asked about this, the President Director of PT Telkom Indonesia, Ririek Adriansyah, asked that the company owned by Elon Musk be treated the same as local players.
“We are ready to compete with them. What we have to do is make sure we do level playing field lah,” said Ririek when met after the BUMN Coffee event at the BUMN Ministry office, Jakarta, Thursday (26/10/2023).
One example is the payment of BHP (Organizer Rights Fee) which is charged to cellular operators. SpaceX, which owns Starlink, must also pay these fees.
“For example, they have to pay for BHP spectrum frequencies. That’s all that matters,” he said.
Telkom is known to have collaborated with this satellite-based internet provider. Telkomsat, a subsidiary of Telkom, provides access to a number of remote areas. This access is provided with the Star Vsat service which utilizes Starlink’s satellites.
Telkomsat has also obtained Starlink Non-Geostationary Satellite (NGSO) Landing Rights in Indonesia. Starlink is used as backhaul, connecting the main network with the access network.
However, rumors say Starlink also wants to do business by selling services directly to the public. On its official website, the company states that the service will start operating in Indonesia next year.
The website also provides a special page to view coverage plans in the country. When entering several areas in Jakarta, Starlink plans to open services there.
“Order now to order your Starlink. Starlink targets service in your area starting in 2024. Availability depends on regulatory approval. In each coverage area, orders will be served first,” wrote Starlink in a notification on its official website.
