Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) revealed that the Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant (PLTS) with a capacity of 192 Mega Watt peak (MWp) only uses 4% of the surface of the Cirata Reservoir.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif said that the Cirata Floating PLTS, which is predicted to be the largest floating PLTS in Southeast Asia (ASEAN) and the third largest in the world, “only takes up” 200 hectares of reservoir land.
“It’s surface utilization for energy it’s working. The one there (Cirata Floating PLTS) alone has only been used for 200 hectares, that’s approximately 4% of surface,” he explained when met at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Office, Jakarta, Friday (10/11/2023).
He said the total surface that can be utilized from the reservoir is 20%. Arifin said that later his party would encourage the use of the reservoir for floating PLTS up to five times the current installed capacity of 192 MWp.
“So if it’s 20%, you can do it 5 more times. Then we’ll encourage it so it can run. Once it’s running, concentrate on that,” he added.
Previously, PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said that the Cirata Floating PLTS was capable of electrifying as many as 50 thousand households. The PLTS currently has a capacity of 192 Mega Watt Peak (MWp), where local workers and MSMEs are also part of the construction of this project.
“The Cirata Floating PLTS of 192 MW is capable of electrifying 50 thousand households with clean energy. This is the direction of the President of the Republic of Indonesia and is being implemented by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources,” explained Darmawan on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Cirata Floating PLTS, Purwakarta, Thursday (9/11/2023).
Darmawan mentioned a collaboration project between PLN through PLN Nusantara Power (51%) and a company from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), namely Masdar (49%).
“So this is international cooperation in order to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing climate change,” he added.
Apart from that, he said that the electricity production of 192 MWp would be distributed to PLN’s substations which could be included in the Java-Bali electricity transmission.
“Then we connected it to our main substation, which we increased to 150 thousand volts or KV and entered the Java-Bali transmission. This means it is consumed by households and industry,” he said.
This PLTS has an area of 200 hectares, which was built on the Cirata Reservoir which is located in three West Java regencies, namely Purwakarta, Cianjur and West Bandung. Construction of this project has been underway since 2021.
The PLTS will contribute to the carbon emissions neutral target or Net Zero Emissions (NZE) of 245 Giga Watt hour (GWh) per year and reduce carbon emissions by 214,000 tons of CO2 per year.
The price of electricity from the Cirata Floating PLTS is 5.8 US$ cents per kilo Watt hour (kWh). In its construction, the local community involved approximately 1,400 workers from local communities around the project and MSMEs.
