McDonald’s may be the home of fast food, but you can still get stuck in line at rush hour, frustratingly waiting for your Big Mac and fries.
If you’re dreaming of a way to push the boundaries, you’re in luck: because Maccies has launched a new app feature that lets you do just that.
Following a successful trial in London, customers across the UK can now access the ‘Order Early’ feature on the McDonald’s App.
Effectively allowing you to jump the queue, it uses special technology to notify your local outlet when you’re nearby so they can start preparing your meal – almost like texting your housemates on the way home and asking them to put a pizza in the oven for you.
How does Order Ahead work?
Order Ahead uses geofencing technology, which is location-based technology that creates boundaries on a virtual map. Therefore, you must agree to location sharing in order to use it.
You order and pay via the app before leaving the location – be it home or work – then go to pick up your food.
When your phone enters the boundary, an alert is sent to the restaurant so they can prepare your order as you approach and time it just right, so it’s ready for your arrival.
According to McDonald’s, your food will only start cooking when you are about three minutes away from the restaurant.
However, it’s worth noting that this isn’t available for Drive-Thru orders, if you’re hoping to shave a few minutes off your wait while you’re still on the road.
“Order Ahead is ideal for customers who value speed and convenience, perfect for busy parents who are always on the go, students busy with deadlines, or those who just want a quick lunch,” said a McDonald’s spokesperson.
‘Whether you’re taking out or dining in, Order Ahead helps you skip the line and enjoy your favorite McDonald’s food faster. From Big Macs on the go to McNuggets at Click and Serve, or French Fries delivered to your table — your order will be hot, fresh, and perfectly timed.
‘So satisfy your hunger by ordering ahead on the McDonald’s App!’

This comes after the chain recently made some major changes to its menu.
Breakfast Roll was quietly discontinued in September, after five years on the morning lineup. Priced at £4.69, it serves sausages, eggs, bacon and cheese on a soft roll with tomato sauce or chocolate sauce.
Likewise, the new Caramel Loaded McFlurry, which launched in September alongside the return of Monopoly, was removed from the menu after just one week.
According to McDonald’s, the food was removed from the restaurant due to ‘quality control issues’, although they did not say what the problem was.
And, of course, McDonald’s fans will have noticed the launch of the World Heist menu last month, which features favorites from around the world, including burgers from Canada and Australia, McNuggets and drinks from Japan, fries from Poland, and more.
