Chinese Version of Google Removes Israel from the Map, These are the Facts Tech – 9 hours ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia-The public in China was shocked by the news that platforms owned by technology giants Alibaba and Baidu removed the name Israel from their digital map services. The news of the removal emerged as the Israel-Hamas conflict became increasingly heated and the Chinese government’s stance in favor of a ceasefire.

A number of users stated that the name of the country of Israel could not be found on the platforms owned by the two companies. Quoted from Insider, the reason for the deletion is not yet clear, but a number of users have been busy talking about this change since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 2023.

Baidu spokeswoman Jing Meng denied the company had removed Israel from its services. He said area names would not be visible when space was limited. “If space is limited, our map may not show the names or flags of some regions,” Jing Meng said.

Meng said the region’s name can still be found on Baidu’s map. Users can utilize the search feature to do so. “Users can find countries or regions in Baidu Maps by using the map search function,” Meng said. The Alibaba spokesperson has not yet responded to information regarding the removal of the Israeli map.

Regarding the Israeli and Palestinian war, China has advocated a two-state solution. The Associated Press reported that this solution would allow Palestine to become independent.

After the war broke out last month, President Xi Jinping also continued to call for a ceasefire. China also refuses to condemn Hamas and says it opposes any form of violence against ordinary citizens.
