Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Greenpeace, an environmental campaign organization, criticized the six major e-commerce companies in China.
This institution assesses that e-commerce companies are not making enough efforts to direct consumers to adopt the concept of a sustainable lifestyle.
“There has been clear progress for some of these companies since the last time we conducted a formal analysis,” said Tang Damin, Greenpeace project manager in Beijing, quoted from ReutersFriday (10/11/2023).
“But overall, Chinese e-commerce giants are still not optimal in implementing the concept of sustainability,” he added.
In a report assessing the environmental records of China’s six e-commerce giants, Greenpeace said online shopping platform Pinduoduo had the worst performance. The company has not even made any progress in climate and environmental protection.
Pinduoduo received negative marks on Greenpeace’s list after failing to develop a strategy on issues such as climate change, waste, hazardous chemicals and biodiversity.
The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Pinduoduo is also the only company among the six companies that is considered not to have implemented measures to prohibit the trade in illegal plants and animals.
The report also said that although video app operators Kuaishou and Douyin had taken action, banned products were still available on their platforms until the end of August. Neither Kuaishou nor Douyin owner Bytedance responded to requests for comment.
Greenpeace said Alibaba was the best performer, and was the only one of the six companies that had a strategy to respond to climate change through engaging and empowering users and businesses on its platforms.
