Launching from CNBC Make Ita new report from Samsung and Morning Consult reveals that media and entertainment is the top industry that Generation Z is most interested in, beating out technology, healthcare, and education.

According to the report, which surveyed more than 1,000 Americans aged 16 to 25, Generation Z values ​​work that is flexible and creative. Because, it can maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life (work-life balance).


“Lifestyle is the attraction,” said Head of Corporate Citizenship at Samsung Electronics America, Ann Woo, quoted Thursday (16/11/2023).

“Media and entertainment are creative industries that offer flexibility and self-expression. These two are the most important things young workers want in a job,” continued Woo.

According to the same report, 2023 is the most difficult year to work in media and entertainment. This is because several companies have had to face a decline in advertising and business revenues streaming which is unprofitable.

Based on records from the United States (US) Bureau of Labor Statistics, the entertainment sector has lost more than 44 thousand jobs since May 2023.

Despite this, Woo believes that Generation Z still values ​​community and social impact more than their career security.

According to several surveys, this is because balance between work and personal life, opportunities to learn and develop, and creative freedom are the main priorities for Generation Z who are just starting their careers.

As time goes by, Generation Z is increasingly interested in careers in media and entertainment as more and more young people see the influence of social media as a viable career path.

According to the latest Morning Consult report, around 57 percent of Generation Z admit that they want to become influencers. This is due to the increasing popularity of TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube creating a new class of entrepreneurs, the “creators”.

Morning Consult says that “creators” are a group of freelancers, business coaches, gamers and other professionals who share and monetize their skills through these social media platforms.

“Generation Z who are “very online” may quickly realize that they must quickly start producing content that is interesting to the public. According to them, content can be an opportunity to get paid and become a business,” said Woo.

Although more and more young people are turning to influencers and entrepreneurship, Woo says that doesn’t guarantee they’ll stay there forever. In fact, both types of careers are only part of the attraction.

According to the latest report from EY, Generation Z plans to switch careers faster than previous generations. Nearly 40 percent of Generation Z have side jobs, such as being self-employed and hope to retire early.

“Of all industries, media and entertainment has a reputation for being one of the most flexible. That’s why Gen Z sees the media and entertainment industry as the most promising path to achieving their career goals, no matter how often things change,” Woo explained.
