Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Israeli troops reportedly began operating in the heart of Gaza city. The Zionist state troops are currently hunting for the Hamas leader who is trapped in a bunker in the area.
Gaza residents said earlier that Israeli tanks were positioned on the outskirts of Gaza City, Hamas’ stronghold in the north of the territory and home to about a third of its 2.3 million residents before the outbreak of hostilities.
“Gaza City is under siege, we are operating within it,” Israeli Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised statement, as quoted by Reuters.
“We are increasing pressure on Hamas every hour, every day. So far, we have killed thousands of terrorists, both above and below the ground.”
Meanwhile Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Hamas’ most senior leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, was being isolated in his bunker.
“IDF (Israeli military) troops… came from the north and south. They invaded with full coordination between land, air and sea forces,” said Gallant.
“They maneuvered on foot, armored vehicles and tanks, along with military engineers from all directions and they had one target – the Hamas terrorists in Gaza, their infrastructure, their commanders, bunkers, communications rooms. They tightened surveillance around Gaza City. “
Gallant said that beneath the city there are kilometers of tunnels that run beneath schools and hospitals and are weapons depots, communications rooms and hideouts for militants.
The Israeli military said Hamas militants fired anti-tank missiles at Israeli troops from a nearby hospital and soldiers found weapons hidden in a school in northern Gaza.
Hamas’ military wing, which has controlled the small and densely populated enclave for 16 years, said its fighters inflicted heavy losses and damage on advancing Israeli forces. They have not commented on Sinwar’s possible fate.
The Israeli attack occurred after Hamas attacked the Zionist state on October 7, killing 1,400 Israelis and kidnapping 200 people. Since then, Israel has continued to bombard the coastal region, killing more than 10,000 people, about 40% of them children.
