High cholesterol can trigger a heart attack, how come? Lifestyle – 2 hours ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Cholesterol is a fat compound, a quarter of which is produced by liver cells and is useful for building cell membranes and carrying out brain and nerve functions.


The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that cholesterol functions as a protector for body cells, forming hormones, helping the production of vitamin D, components that form bile acids, and components needed to connect connections between brain nerve cells.

According to Everyday Health, there are two types of cholesterol in the body, namely high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or good cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol. Cardiologist, Bruce Andrus, said that cholesterol is important for the body.

“Cholesterol is important for human body cells,” said Andrus, quoted from Everyday Health, Thursday (9/11/2023).

Even though it is beneficial for the body, cholesterol levels need to be maintained. This is because high LDL levels can cause various disease problems, such as the risk of heart disease, stroke, and worsening blood circulation.

Heart attack is the health risk most closely related to cholesterol. The accumulation of fat or plaque in the arteries due to high cholesterol levels makes it difficult for blood to flow, causing heart attacks.

“The accumulated plaque makes it difficult for blood to flow. This deposit can eventually break and form a clot that causes a heart attack,” said Andrus.

Thus, Andrus urges every individual to control cholesterol levels, namely below 200 milligrams/deciliter (mg/dL). Cholesterol is declared high if the level reaches 240 mg/dL and above.

Here’s how to keep cholesterol levels normal and avoid heart attacks.

1. Regularly consume fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish and lean meat
2. Exercise regularly
3. Maintain ideal body weight
4. Manage stress
5. Quit smoking
6. Reduce alcohol consumption
