Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) attended the second Voice of Global South (VOGSS) Summit on Friday, (17/11/2023). In his speech, Jokowi asked members of southern countries to bring about peace between Hamas and Israel.
Jokowi conveyed this in his intervention at his first session. President Jokowi highlighted the concerning situation in Gaza, and called on global leaders to increase their efforts to help bring peace to the region.
“Your Excellency, currently the humanitarian situation in Gaza is increasingly worrying. More than 11,000 people have become victims, most of whom are women and children. But unfortunately the world seems powerless to find a way out,” said Jokowi, quoted from an official statement. , Sunday, (19/11/2023).
In front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Global South leaders, Jokowi invited them to show solidarity for Palestine. He also pushed for a ceasefire.
“Humanitarian assistance must be accelerated and increased, and most importantly peace negotiations must begin immediately,” he added.
Apart from the conflict in Gaza, Jokowi also encouraged the Global South to take responsibility for global governance. He advised that developing countries can no longer just be consumers and rely solely on exports of raw materials, developing countries must become global players and become part of the world supply chain.
It is known that India has hosted the inaugural VOGSS on January 12-13 2023 in a virtual format bringing together 125 Global South countries.
VOGSS is India’s attempt to provide a common platform to consider issues, interests and priorities affecting developing countries and also to exchange ideas and solutions, and most importantly, to unite voices and goals in addressing problems and priorities.
In his opening speech at the inaugural session of the Summit, PM Modi announced the establishment of the “DAKSHIN” (Knowledge Development and Sharing Initiative) Global South Center of Excellence. Dakshin also translates to “South” in Hindi.
“During the G20 Summit, I on behalf of India proposed to launch satellites for weather monitoring and climate monitoring in the Global South. We are working on it quickly,” PM Modi said.
Modi believes that new technologies should not widen the gap between countries in the north and south. In the age of artificial intelligence, it is important for technology to be used responsibly.
