Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – As the war escalated, Israel’s name was reportedly removed from China’s digital map service. According to a number of users, the name of the country could not be found on platforms owned by Alibaba and Baidu.
Report Wall Street Journal said the digital map still displays internationally recognized state borders, quoted from Insider, Thursday (9/11/2023).
Insider wrote that the reason for the deletion was not clear. However, a number of users have been busy talking about this change since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 2023.
Spokespeople for Alibaba and Baidu did not immediately respond to requests for comment. But to TelegraphBaidu denied removing Israel’s name.
Company spokesperson, Jing Meng, said the name of the region will not be visible when there is limited space. “If space is limited, our maps may not display the names or flags of some areas,” he said.
Meng said the region’s name can still be found on Baidu’s map. Users can utilize the search feature to do so.
“Users can find countries or regions in Baidu Maps by using the map search function,” Meng said.
Regarding the Israeli and Palestinian war, China has advocated a two-state solution. Associated Press reported that the solution would allow Palestine to become independent.
After the war broke out last month, President Xi Jinping also continued to call for a ceasefire. China also refuses to condemn Hamas and says it opposes any form of violence against ordinary citizens.
