Reporting from Raffles Medical Group, endocrinology specialist and consultant, dr. Abel Soh, said that durian does not contain cholesterol. In fact, durian contains monounsaturated fat which can reduce LDL cholesterol levels.

“Durian does not contain cholesterol. The fat found in durian is monounsaturated fat and this can help reduce a person’s LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels,” explained Dr. Soh, quoted Monday (23/10/2023).

Similar to Dr. Soh, chief dietitian, Bibi Chia, also stated that the belief that durian can increase cholesterol levels is a myth.

“The myth that durian [dapat] increases cholesterol levels due to [durian] does not contain cholesterol and limits saturated fat,” said Chia.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), durian cholesterol levels are considered zero because the numbers are not significant. The following is the nutritional content of durian in 100 grams or about 3 pieces, as reported by HealthxChange.

Apart from being a good source of carbohydrates, fat, fiber and protein, durian is a fruit that is full of nutrients and contains abundant vitamins, namely vitamin C, potassium, the amino acid tryptophan, folic acid, pantonenic acid, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B3, and vitamin B6.

Not only that, durian also contains antioxidant compounds, such as caffeic acid, anthocyanin, and quercetin; and important minerals that the body needs, such as iron, calcium, magnesium, sodium, zinc and phosphorus.
