Of the 6 names, there is the only woman who was named a national hero, namely Ratu Kalinyamat. So who really is Queen Kalinyamat?

Profile of Queen Kalinyamat

Queen Kalinyamat’s real name is Retna Kencana. She is the daughter of Sultan Trenggono who was the ruler of the Demak Sultanate. The origin of the title ‘Kalinyamat’ was obtained because her husband, Prince Kalinyamat, was killed by Arya Penangsang troops.

When the murder occurred, Queen Kalinyamat was lucky not to be killed. From here, revenge emerged and vowed to kill Arya Penangsang. In fact, his oath specifically stated that he would not wear a single shirt before Arya died.

In the end, the oath was proven and Kalinyamat became the ruler and leader of the people of Jepara and its surroundings. When he became ruler of Jepara, Kalinyamat took on the role of expelling the Portuguese from the archipelago.

This expulsion occurred in 1550. He led 4,000 soldiers who were transported via 40 ships to Malacca, the center of Portuguese power. Unfortunately, according to de Graaf in The Beginning of the Mataram Awakening (2001), the team lost completely. Almost half of Kalinyamat’s troops died and many of his ships were sunk.

Even so, this failure did not make Kalinyamat give up. Several years later, he, assisted by the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam, returned to fight the Portuguese in Malacca.

This time he brought a larger army of tens of thousands. Unfortunately, once again the troops failed. Kalinyamat’s Jepara leadership immediately weakened and decided to return home early.

After that, Kalinyamat was in Jepara until the end of his life in 1579. Even so, Kalinyamat’s persistence in carrying out attacks amazed the Portuguese. Portuguese said Kalinyamat as the Queen of Jepara who was brave and brave because she dared to lead thousands of troops to Portugal.

Even though he failed to achieve victory, Kalinyamat’s traces of struggle were considered heroic. On this basis, the Indonesian government declared him a national hero.
