Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Be wary of popular applications on Android because they can drain the contents of your account. This is known from the latest report from Doctor Web.
They identified several Android apps that had more than 2 million installs, masquerading as gaming or productivity apps, but were actually software for distributing and serving endless pop-up ads and potentially carrying malware.
This loophole was originally discovered by Bleeping Computer. Now, these apps have now been removed from Google Play. But if you still have the app, delete it from your device immediately.
The application is called Super Skibydi Killer, which has been installed more than one million times. The app promises a game where players take on the role of a “super assassin” and try to kill their enemies through a series of shooting games.
Once installed, Super Skibydi Killer and others try to “hide from the user” by using a transparent home screen icon or what looks like the Google Chrome browser.
“When the user clicks on the icon, the trojan slides into the browser and continues to operate in the background,” said Doctor Web, quoted from PCMa, Monday (30/10/2023).
Other apps that are part of the scheme include Agent Shooter, Rainbow Stretch and Rubber Punch 3D.
Doctor Web also discovered two Joker family applications on Google Play that subscribe users to paid services.
One of these applications, Love Emoji Messenger, has been downloaded 50,000 times. Another app, Beauty Wallpaper HD, was only downloaded about 1,000 times.
Additionally, the site also found several fake apps distributed as financial software for things like stock trading or home accounting.
But in reality they instead launched a fraudulent site where victims were encouraged to become investors. These apps include GazEndow Economic, MoneyMentor, FinancialFusion, and Financial Vault.
Another game on Google Play is advertised as a game, but after installing it instead loads an online casino website. These games include Eternal Maze, Jungle Jewels, Stellar Secrets, Fire Fruits, Cowboy’s Frontier, and Enchanted Elixir.
